Lawton, OK Geo-Thermal Installations

geothermal geo-thermal install lawton okGeothermal heating and cooling is a smart way to regulate the temperature in your home. Geothermal technology uses the constant temperature of the earth to heat and cool a home. Unlike traditional furnaces and air conditioners, a geothermal system does not use fossil fuels such as gas, oil or propane. Instead, it collects the natural heat from underground through a series of pipes. Fluid circulates through the pipes to bring the heat to the home. There, compressors and heat exchangers spread the heat throughout the home with the help of duct fans.

In the summer, the system reverses itself and transfers the heat from the home out of the house and back down below the earth. Because it can do the work of two units (an air conditioner and a furnace), geothermal technology is very economical.

The system of pipes that runs underground is called a loop. There are four different kinds of loops in geothermal heating and cooling:

Horizontal loops – these loops are buried in trenches that range from one hundred to four hundred feet in length. Usually, this is the best choice when there is plenty of land available.

Vertical loops – these loops are drilled downward instead of lying flat. They are typically one hundred to four hundred feet deep. Because most homes don't have lots of land, this is the most common installation.

Pond loops – if the homeowner has a pond or lake on the property, the loops of pipe are placed on the bottom of the body of water.

Open loops – these loops are used when a large amount of groundwater from a well is available.

Three main benefits of geothermal heating are:
  • Guaranteed continuous warmth in the winter - Unlike a furnace which can fail, the earth is constantly warm and won't "run out" of energy. There is no air pollution from fuel or danger of carbon monoxide leaks – just clean air to breathe.
  • Reduction in energy bills – According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, geothermal systems can save 30-70% on heating costs and 20-50% on cooling costs. Plus, because the source is very predictable and renewable, homeowners don't have to worry about their electric or gas bill rising in the future.
  • Quiet – unlike a furnace that switches on and off and uses fans, a geothermal system emits no noise.

It does cost a little more upfront, but geothermal heating and cooling will save you big money in the long run.
